Visas

General information

Generally, any foreign citizen who wishes to enter Thailand is required to obtain a visa from a Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate-General. However, nationals of certain countries do not require a visa if they meet visa exemption requirements.

Applying for a visa

You can apply for a visa in-person or by mail. Please include a self-addressed prepaid envelope when you submit your application (we recommend a registered envelope).

The type of visa we issue will be determined by the purpose of your visit:

Visas are generally valid for 3 months, but in some cases may be granted for up to 6 months, 1 year or 3 years, depending on the type of visa.

Visa processing time

Visa processing time is 3 working days (with complete required documentation), excluding mailing time.

Please note that we will not process your visa application if you have not submitted all required documents

Transit Visa
  • Passport or travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months, and copy
  • Visa application form, fully completed
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm) of the applicant
  • For non-Australian or non-resident applicants, proof of an Australian Electronic Visa
  • Evidence of travel from Thailand (and for applicants applying for double-entry visa, a copy of an airline ticket showing the second entry to Thailand)
  • Evidence of adequate finances (THB 10,000 per person, or THB 20,000 per family)
  • Invitation letter (or email, etc.) to participate in sports (for Transit category “S” who will participate in sport activities only)
Tourist Visa
  • Passport or travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months, and copy
  • Visa application form, fully completed
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm) of the applicant
  • For non-Australian or non-resident applicant, proof of an Australian Electronic Visa
  • Copy of an airline ticket indicating the date of arrival to and departure from Thailand
  • Evidence of adequate finances (THB 20,000 per person, or THB 40,000 per family)
    • For multiple entries, a certified bank’s letter of balance or official bank statement showing recent balance of no less than THB 200,000
  • Confirmed reservation of accommodation in Thailand
  • For Tourist category “MT”, a letter from the hospital in Thailand, medical history, and medical certificate
Non-Immigrant Visa

Required documents for ALL TYPES of Non-Immigrant Visa

  • Passport or travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months, and copy
  • Visa application form, fully completed
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm) of the applicant
  • For non-Australian or non-resident applicant, proof of an Australian Electronic Visa
  • Copy of an airline ticket indicating the date of arrival to and departure from Thailand

Additional Documents Required for EACH TYPE of Non-Immigrant Visa

Non-Immigrant Visa type ED 
(for education)
  • Transcript/letter of acceptance from the host schools, universities or institutes in Thailand indicating your length of stay and field of study
Non-Immigrant Visa type B 
(for business and employment)
  • Letter from your employer stating your position, length of employment, date and purpose of visit. If you are a business owner, please provide relevant documents
  • Invitation letter (or email, etc.) from your host company/organization in Thailand indicating the length of stay and purpose of your visit
  • Letter of acceptance from your employer in Thailand
  • Copy of your work contract
  • For teachers in private schools, a letter of approval from Thai government agencies such as the Office of the Private Education Commission of the Office of the Basic Education Commission
Non-Immigrant Visa type O 
(for dependent, spouse and family visit, or spouse of Thai national)
  • Copy of the visa or work permit of a spouse or parent who is currently working in Thailand
  • Proof of your relationship, such as marriage certificate or birth certificate
  • Confirmation letter from your spouse or family member
Non-Immigrant Visa type O 
(for volunteer or NGO)
  • Invitation or acceptance letter from the host organization in Thailand indicating your position, responsibilities and length of stay in Thailand
  • Copy of the host organization’s registration or license in Thailand as a non-profit organization
  • Copy of the passport or ID card of the person who signed the invitation or acceptance letter
Non-Immigrant Visa type O-A 
(for retirement long stay: must be 50 years of age and over)

Three sets of the following documents (1 original set and 2 copies):

  • Passport or travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months, and copy
  • Retirement Visa application form, fully completed
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm) of the applicant
  • For non-Australian or non-resident applicant, proof of an Australian Electronic Visa
  • Evidence of adequate finances:
    • a deposit account of at least THB 800,000 (approximately AUD 32,000), or
    • an income statement with a monthly salary of THB 65,000 (approximately AUD 2,600), or
    • a deposit account plus monthly income of no less than THB 800,000 (approximately AUD 32,000 AUD) a year
  • Police name check certificate issued less than 3 months prior to submitting the application

Additional documents required for 5-year visa

Eligible applicants: citizens of Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States

  • Evidence of adequate finances:
    • a deposit account of at least THB 3,000,000 (approximately AUD 120,000), or
    • a statement of income with an annual amount of more than THB 1,200,000 (approximately AUD 48,000), or
    • a deposit account plus monthly income with a total amount of more than THB 3,000,000 (approximately AUD 120,000) per year
  • Evidence of health insurance from a Thai insurance company
Working Holiday Visa

Only for Australian citizens between 18 and 30 years of age.

  • Passport or travel document with a minimum validity of 6 months, and copy
  • Visa application form, fully completed
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm) of the applicant
  • Working and Holiday Scheme form, fully completed
  • Certificate or transcript of tertiary education
  • Bank statement showing deposits that amount to more than AUD 5,000
  • Chest X-ray report and medical examination approved by a medical doctor or GP within 3 months
